Tikanga Māori Qualifications Review – Phase One Approval to Develop

Current Developments

In January 2015, the Tikanga Māori and the Reo Māori qualifications reviews were combined, and the further development of the qualifications will occur simultaneously as the Te Reo me Ngā Tikanga Māori Qualifications Review. This change acknowledges the inherent link between te reo Māori me ōna tikanga. Māori Qualifications Services (NZQA) will continue to lead this phase of the review.

The Governance and Working groups have been combined to aid coherency and co-ordination of the qualification development through to the application for Approval to List.

Background for the Tikanga Māori Review

The qualifications for Māori Studies and Customs were scheduled for review in 2013 as part of the nationwide Targeted Review of Qualifications (TRoQ). TRoQ covers all qualifications from levels 1-6 on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF aims to prevent duplication of qualifications on the NZQF. The review ensures qualifications are relevant to future learners, employers and other stakeholders such as whānau, hāpori, hapū, and iwi. For further information about TRoQ, see Targeted review of qualifications.

Those qualifications identified as part of the Māori Studies and customs cluster can be found on the qualifications review schedule page for 2013.

The initial stages of the review of the Reo Māori qualifications was led in collaboration between Te Wānanga o Aotearoa and NZQA.

The review co-leaders Te Wānanga o Aotearoa (TWoA) and New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) facilitated three full-day Think Tank hui with qualification owners, accredited deliverers and all other stakeholders to agree the approach and structure for the review and development of these qualifications.

The notes from these hui are available:
