Advanced Vocational Awards (AVA) qualifications

AVA qualifications include a range of New Zealand Certificate and Technicians Certificate qualifications. AVA qualifications have two components to them - academic course work and three years relevant work experience.

Information on work experience

See links on sidebar:

  • Work experience - advice (general advice for all options to assist New Zealand Certificate and Technicians Certificate candidates preparing their work experience documentation);
  • Work experience - guidelines (downloadable information relating to each certificate option, and includes the Employers Report form); and
  • Appeal Process (information about the appeal process and a link to download the Appeal Cover Sheet).

Final dates for award of certificates

These qualifications are nationally recognised, but are in the process of being phased out. The qualifications that can still be awarded are listed here Word or PDF . The last date for award of all the listed qualifications is 31 December 2008. Qualifications not listed can no longer be awarded.

National Certificates and National Diplomas are replacing these New Zealand qualifications. To search for replacement qualifications click here.

Assessment of AVA subjects

Prescriptions for all AVA subjects have now been withdrawn. These subjects can no longer be assessed by teaching institutions.

Completion of subjects by cross-credit (exemption) is the only remaining option - see below.

Completion of certificates by cross-credit

There are some limited opportunities for NZCE candidates to complete the academic requirements for their qualification via cross credits from other qualifications. For further information see Guidelines for NZCE Cross Credits from Other Qualifications [Circular T2003 002].

The AVA handbook outlines in detail the requirements for each of the certificates. The 2003 version, which is the last to be published, can be downloaded in Word or Adobe PDF
