ASSESSMENT AND CERTIFICATION RULES AND PROCEDURES FOR TERTIARY QUALIFICATIONS
Appendix II
This document serves as a guide for accredited providers of NZDipBus and is not to be viewed as a mandatory requirement.
GUIDELINES FOR ENTRY CRITERIA FOR NZDIPBUS (version one)
Please Note: Entry requirements for version two of the qualification are different from those of version one.
Background
A review of possible entry criteria for the New Zealand Diploma in Business using NCEA achievement standards was requested at the final meeting of the NACBS in 2003. Entry criteria have not been specified within the regulations with each accredited provider establishing these. The following have been typically used (with some variation):
- Sixth Form Certificate (SFC) Year 12
Maximum of 18 points in best 4 subjects (scale of 1-8 with a grade of 1 the highest achievement)
plus
Grade of 5 or less in English
- Higher School Certificate Year 13
Pass in HSC (Bursary marks of 60% in Accounting and Economics give cross-credits to 100 and 120)
National Certificate of Educational Achievement - relevant information
This is a qualification on the National Qualifications Framework and results are outcomes-based and expressed as credits at levels 1, 2 and 3 on the framework. NCEA level 2 has essentially replaced Sixth-Form Certificate and level 3, University Bursaries Examinations.
Equivalencies have been established by NZQA to assist in the transition to the NCEA. The relevant ones are:
| SFC Current Benchmark (Grade) | NCEA Credit Equivalent (each subject) |
| 1 | 24 Level 2 credits |
| 2 | 24 Level 2 credits |
3 |
18 Level 2 credits |
4 |
18 Level 2 credits |
| 5 | 12 Level 2 credits |
6 |
6 Level 2 credits |
7 |
None |
8 |
None |
SFC (Aggregated) |
|
| Total of 16 in best 4 subjects | 60 Level 2 credits |
| Total of 20 in best 4 subjects | 50 Level 2 credits |
University Entrance - Bursary |
University Entrance - NCEA |
| 3 C passes in Bursary subjects | 42 Level 3 credits incl literacy/numeracy credits |
Suggested Entry Criteria
Level 2 or above |
Incl Specified Credits |
International Students |
50 credits (at least 12 in each of 3 subjects) |
Literacy 8 level 1 credits Numeracy 8 level 1 credits |
IELTS 6.0 (academic) No individual band lower than 5.5 |
This suggestion has considered the following:
- The number of level 2 credits are in line with the equivalence of SFC average grades of 5 over four subjects, ie 20 or less in the best four subjects. This is, in effect, the requirement used under SFC.
- A literacy and numeracy requirement is consistent with University Entrance but is intended to be less onerous to achieve. This will ensure that minimum levels are reached but allow for staircasing to degree qualifications.
- This requires a spread of credit across at least three subjects and not just a concentration of credit across a few subjects. This is consistent with University Entrance.
- An English proficiency level is consistent with the level used in the majority of undergraduate programmes.
These guidelines are to be reviewed November 2005. Comment may be forwarded to:
