External Evaluation and Reviews (EERs) in 2020

To recognise the disruption caused by COVID-19, the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) has reviewed the original 2020 EER schedule and re-prioritised EERs for the remainder of this year.

EERs already underway will be completed

NZQA will complete EERs already underway when the COVID-19 lockdown was imposed. Scoping discussions and NZQA analysis of self-review reports continued during lockdown. The final field work steps will be completed virtually.

Prioritised EERs

We will proceed with our re-prioritised EER schedule from 1 August 2020.

This will give TEOs time to restart face-to-face teaching, and plan for their participation in EER.

TEOs that will be prioritized include:

  • those that haven’t had an EER for more than 4 years
  • Category 3 or 4
  • new PTEs that have not yet had an EER
  • those triggered by active compliance concerns.

Rescheduled EERs

The remaining TEOs on the original 2020 EER schedule will be rescheduled until 2021. These TEOs can still request an earlier EER at a mutually agreed date from mid-June 2020.

EER fee

NZQA will work with TEOs on a flexible EER fee payment arrangement to take into account financial pressures, if required.

Virtual site visits will be used to reduce EER costs, where possible. For example, EER field work interviews and site meetings can take place using an online meeting platform to reduce travel costs.

New 2020 EER schedules

The reprioritised EER schedule for the remainder of the 2020 calendar year is now available on the NZQA website.

2021 EER schedule

NZQA will issue an updated EER schedule for the first half of 2021 in September.
