Man standing and speaking to another man and woman

NZQA offers several options and workshops for events to help assessors with the assessment of internally-assessed standards. These are subject-specific, or can be generic assessment support, and tailored to the audience.

This support relates to internally-assessed standards exclusively, and are usually scheduled for a half or full day event.

Presentation Slot/Guest speaker

A request may be made for a moderator to attend a regional or national meeting to speak on a topic associated with internal assessment. This could include such topics as particular strands within standards, levels (e.g. 1, 2 or 3), or methods of collecting evidence for assessment purposes. This option allows you to select a topic associated with the assessment of internally-assessed standards relevant to the audience.

Aim: to offer targeted assessment support

  • Targeted subject-specific or generic assessment support, tailored to the audience.
  • Face-to-face or online.
  • Can be a half or full day event, or a speaking slot at an organised event.

Conditions

  • To enable a range of professional dialogue to take place, a minimum of 10 participants is recommended, but we will consider requests where this is not possible.
  • The request must relate to the assessment of internally assessed standards. Support on teaching and learning or externally assessed standards is out of scope.
  • All requests for workshops are subject to moderator availability.
  • Requests for individual school or organisation support are unable to be provided.
  • To ensure we can fulfil your request, please give us as much notice as possible, ideally 10 weeks.

Webinars

90-minute targeted webinars are free for teachers, provided a minimum number of participants is met. The aims are to increase confidence in making assessor decisions at the national standard and facilitating assessment efficiently. These can be subject specific or generic (universal) assessment support. NZQA will tailor the live event to suit the requirements of the audience.

Preparatory material is sent 2 weeks in advance to allow time during the webinar to discuss samples of student work and engage with the moderator. The webinar format allows for targeted interactive content and the unpacking of a selection of standards. Participants will discuss and make assessor decisions with colleagues.

There is often an opportunity to collaborate with subject associations to improve the scope and the reach of our targeted webinars.

Making Assessor Judgements Workshops

Making Assessor Judgements Workshops are subject-specific, face-to-face and have been delivered over the last ten years. These workshops are available on request to a region or nationally.

For information on the Online Making Assessor Judgements Workshops go to the Online Assessor Support page.

Aim

  • To increase assessor confidence when making assessment judgments for internally assessed standards.
  • To discuss real samples of student work.
  • To engage in professional discussion with colleagues and the moderator about interpreting the standards.

Who should attend?

  • Assessors who need to improve their assessment judgements.
  • Assessors new to standards-based assessment and the NCEA.
  • Beginning assessors.

Cluster Meetings

A request may be made for a number of moderators to attend a regional cluster meeting organised on a specific date or over a series of dates, e.g. an agreed teacher-only day for schools in the Wairarapa. The request must relate to support for internally-assessed standards, and could include such topics as particular strands within standards, levels (e.g. 1, 2 or 3), or methods of collecting evidence for assessment purposes. This option allows you to select topics relevant to the audience and is ideal for those desiring multiple subject areas covered on the day, or over the course of several meetings.

Aim: to offer targeted assessment support

  • Targeted subject-specific or generic assessment support, tailored to the audience.
  • Face-to-face or online.
  • Can be a half or full day event – generally a full day event.

Conditions

  • All requests will be considered. To enable a range of professional dialogue to take place, we recommend at least 10 participants per subject or topic.
  • The request must relate to the assessment of internally assessed standards. Support on teaching and learning or externally assessed standards is out of scope.
