Making Assessor Judgements Workshops are subject-specific, and have been delivered over the last eight years. They are aimed at increasing assessor confidence when making assessment judgements for internally assessed standards.

Aims of the Making Assessor Judgements Workshops

  • To increase assessor confidence when making assessment judgments for internally assessed standards.
  • To discuss real samples of student work.
  • To engage in professional discussion with colleagues and the facilitator about interpreting the standards.

Who should attend?

  • Assessors who need to improve their moderation agreement rates.
  • Assessors new to standards based assessment and the NCEA.
  • Beginning assessors.

It is not intended that these workshops should be attended each year as an annual refresher, as content may not vary from year to year.

Assessors from all learning institutions are welcome to register for this workshop.

There are different delivery options available:

  • Online workshop (scheduled) – delivered over 6 weeks with an estimated time commitment of 1.5 hours per week ($120.00).
  • Face to face regional workshop (on request) – delivered over one day ($120.00). 

Making Assessor Judgements Workshops for Tertiary Education Organisations

There are two workshops specifically for assessors in Tertiary Education Organisations.

The workshops for TEO Literacy discuss unit standards 26622, 26624 and 26625.

The workshops for TEO Numeracy discuss unit standards 26623, 26626 and 26627.

These workshops are also available on request.

Attendance fees and payment 

Your school or organisation will be invoiced at the end of the month that the workshop is completed.

Substitution and Cancellation Policies for scheduled online Making Assessor Judgements Workshops

  1. Once the final registration form has been submitted, the registration fee is due and payable and there will be no waiver of the registration fee for non-attendance.
  2. In the event that the registered person becomes unable to attend a workshop, then NZQA will accept a substitute person up until five working days before the scheduled date of the workshop. Any substitute requests should be sent to
  3. NZQA expressly retains the right to cancel, modify, or reschedule the workshop due to any occurrence or cause including but not limited to events beyond NZQA’s direct control ("a force majeure event").
  4. Should any event occur that requires a workshop to be cancelled or changed, every reasonable effort will be made to contact those who have registered as soon as possible to advise on whether a workshop will proceed or on what revised basis it will proceed. Making Assessor Judgements Workshops (on request)

If you would like to request a face-to-face Making Assessor Judgements Workshop on behalf of a Subject Association or regional cluster group, we welcome your application. 


  • To enable a range of professional dialogue to take place a minimum of 10 (ten) participants are required (hosted in your school or organisation)*.
  • All 'On Request' offerings are subject to facilitator availability.
  • Requests for individual school or organisation support is unable to be provided.
  • Ten weeks' notice is required.

* Should you wish NZQA to arrange venue and catering, the minimum number of participants required is 18 (eighteen).
