Statement

This artwork is inspired by my maunga, Mauao, as the theme of my art this year is ‘The legend of Mauao’. The wheku design was inspired by the carvings inside my wharenui, which I used to represent the patupaiarehe who Mauao called to haul him out to the ocean. The ropes coming down symbolise the Patupaiarehe’s magical ropes which they used to haul Mauao from the forest of Hautere out to Tauranga Moana. I used dark colours in my background to symbolise darkness and represent how Mauao was moved under the cover of night. The circle represents the moon which also symbolises night. The patterns and techniques I used were inspired and influenced by my contemporary Māori artist models.
