Statement

This artwork is a mural inspired by my maunga, Mauao, which is a symbol of Tauranga Moana. I used Māori figures inspired by the carvings inside my wharenui to depict the patupaiarehe who Mauao called to haul him out to the ocean. The rope represents the magic ropes the patupaiarehe plaited which they used to pull him from the forest of Hautere out to Tauranga Moana. The colours, designs, patterns and subject matter I used were influenced by my contemporary Māori artist models.
