Statement

Tēnā koutou katoa. Ko Te Rito Hughes taku ingoa. He uri ahau nō Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāti Unu me Ngāti Tama. My inspiration for these taonga is the story of Mataora, Niwareka and Uetonga, and the knowledge of tā moko and its application. I made this uhi using a branch and the blade from a pig tusk. The ipu-ngārahu is made from uku and I’ve painted it with kōkōwai, the red ochre pigment used by our tūpuna on whare and carvings. The pattern I’ve carved into the ipu represents the moko kauae with the mangopare pattern in the center to symbolise protection.
