Transforming support for internal assessment

Transforming support for internal assessment

As part of NZQA’s digital transformation journey, we are investigating how to better provide support to teachers undertaking internal assessment. As part of this, we have trialled the online delivery of fully facilitated Best Practice Workshops to complement our face-to-face workshops. Additionally we are now looking at alternative options for providing support to assessors online, allowing them to complete self-paced courses.

What we learn from this work will be used to help determine how we should provide support to assessors on an ongoing basis.

Transforming Assessment Praxis

This year, we are expanding an online Transforming Assessment Praxis (TAP) programme. The aim of the programme is two-fold: to give participants the skills to change the context of assessment resources to better meet the needs of learners, and to explore different ways of collecting evidence. This will be delivered in three pilots moving from a facilitated model to a self-paced modular course.

The Transforming Assessment Praxis online workshop includes the contents of our previous face-to-face one-day workshops plus additional activities/readings. The length of the course is intended to encourage participants to practice, share and reflect on strategies learned during the course in a collaborative online environment.

Over 600 individuals have indicated interest in participating in TAP. The first pilot commences on 7 June 2016 with 30 participants from a wide range of schools and kura, both geographically and in terms of decile. There will be two more pilots this year in July and November.

Moderation Best Practice Workshops

NZQA has offered Moderation Best Practice Workshops since 2009. Over the last six years more than 90% of secondary school teachers have attended at least one of these workshops.

We are now providing online opportunities to cater for both those who prefer this style of assessor support and those assessors who live in rural or isolated areas where sufficient interest for a face-to-face workshop is unlikely. However NZQA continues to offer face-to-face, regional workshops where there is sufficient demand.

How can teachers get involved?

Registrations have now closed for the 2016 TAP trials. However there are still spaces available for those interested in some subject specific Moderation best practice workshops. Please complete the Registration of Interest form to register your interest in one of these workshops.
