Independent exemplar review findings

15 Aug 2017

The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) has accepted the findings of an independent review into NCEA and New Zealand Scholarship exemplars.

NZQA agrees with all 12 recommendations and has found the review helpful in identifying changes to strengthen the management of exemplars and the provision of further and more specific guidance to students and teachers on ensuring authenticity of student work.

We are implementing these recommendations and will ensure they are fully embedded in our quality assurance processes ahead of this year’s examination round.

NZQA is confident that the implementation of the additional process controls informed by the recommendations will not only act to minimise any risk that this situation could recur, but will also be of strategic value to NCEA quality assurance.

NZQA commissioned the independent review in late June 2017 following the identification of a Level 1 History exemplar of student work at excellence level selected following the 2012 NCEA examinations that was largely reproduced from an exemplar selected following the 2011 examinations.
