New Code of Practice for pastoral care of domestic students

14 Oct 2019

On 14 October, the Minister of Education announced better protections for domestic students, including creating a new mandatory Code of Practice setting out the duty of pastoral care tertiary education providers have for their students.

More information is available in the Minister’s announcement and on the Tertiary Education Commission website.

What do students need to do?

Students do not need to do anything. Education providers will be required to make any changes which may be necessary to comply with the new Code.

What does the Code mean?

The code means there will be a consistent approach to the welfare, safety and wellbeing and pastoral care of domestic tertiary students, including higher standards for those in tertiary hostels.

An interim Code in 2020 will include a focus on tertiary providers’ accommodation services.

What protection is available for international students?

International students already have strong protections in place through the existing Education (Pastoral Care of International Students) Code of Practice 2016, which covers safety, wellbeing and accommodation.
