NZQF consultation summary released

01 Mar 2019

Today NZQA released its summary of the feedback to the consultation on proposed changes to the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF). The consultation document is available here (PDF, 918KB).

Ensuring the framework remains fit for purpose, flexible and adaptive to the future needs of learners, iwi, employers and a range of other stakeholders are the key objectives of the review. The framework was first introduced in 1991 and has been in place in its present form since 2010.

The Review got underway in 2017. Sector input was initially provided through the Review Advisory Group and a series of workshops with sector and community representatives. They were asked to comment on proposals, that included adding a wider range of education products on the NZQF, more explicitly transferable competencies into the NZQF and addressing some technical issues within the framework. Submitters’ feedback informed the proposals which we consulted on late last year.

NZQA Acting Deputy Chief Executive Quality Assurance Division, Eve McMahon says they were pleased to receive 64 responses on the framework. “There were a range of responses from across the sector including tertiary education organisations, schools, business and individuals. We feel the range of submissions represents a diverse range of views on this important review.

“Submitters have provided useful feedback and some excellent ideas. All the information we’ve received will be carefully considered for the next stage of the review. We will provide a further discussion document by June.

“We are committed to ensuring the NZQF supports learners lifelong learning and provides employers with confidence that the future workforce has the skills and attributes to meet their needs.

“Reflecting the values and aspirations of Māori and Pasifika in the NZQF is a priority. We want iwi to feel the qualifications system supports and empowers their tamariki.”
