NZQA appoints new Chief Executive

28 Feb 2020

The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) has appointed Dr Grant Klinkum to be its new Chief Executive. Dr Karen Poutasi steps down after nearly 14 years leading the Crown entity.

“Dr Poutasi advised the Board late last year that, after leading the organisation through a challenging and rewarding period of change, it was time for NZQA to seek a new Chief Executive,” said NZQA Acting Chair, Prof. Neil Quigley.

“Under Dr Poutasi’s leadership, NZQA has become recognised as a leader in assessment and quality assurance, trusted by the Government to deliver an increasing range of work.

“The Board is delighted to announce Dr Grant Klinkum as NZQA’s new Chief Executive. Grant will bring the experience of having worked across leadership team roles in two tertiary education organisations and three government education agencies.

“Dr Klinkum joined NZQA in early 2014 following 8 years with the Tertiary Education Commission. He started at NZQA as Deputy Chief Executive Strategic and Corporate Services, before taking up his current role as Deputy Chief Executive Quality Assurance. As a consequence, he understands NZQA’s vision to help learners ‘Qualify for the future world: Kia noho takatū ki tō āmua ao’.

“Since January 2019, Dr Klinkum has been seconded to the Ministry of Education as Acting Deputy Secretary for Graduate Achievement, Vocations and Careers. This role has included having responsibility for the Ministry’s work on the Reform of Vocational Education (RoVE), one of the Government’s key priorities, which has required organisations to work quickly and collaboratively across the education sector,” Prof. Quigley said.

Dr Klinkum will take up the Chief Executive role on April 14.
