Prime Minister's Award presented for 2017

 Prime Minister of New Zealand, Rt Hon Jacinda Ardern, presents the 2017 Prime Minister’s Award for Academic Excellence to Andrew Tang of Scots College.

At the New Zealand Scholarship Top Scholar Awards ceremony on Wednesday 2 May, Rt Hon Jacinda Ardern, presented the 2017 Prime Minister’s Award for Academic Excellence to Andrew Tang of Scots College.

Andrew achieved Outstanding Scholarships in Accounting, Chemistry, Economics, Geography, Physical Education and Physics, and Scholarships in Agricultural and Horticultural Science, Biology, Calculus, English, Media Studies and Statistics. He was Top Subject Scholar for Economics.

The Headmaster of Scots College, Graeme Yule, regards Andrew as “an outstanding capable academic with an inquiring mind and a true passion for learning. He is undoubtedly one of our country’s finest scholars.”

Not only has Andrew achieved academically, but also across a range of cultural activities, from sports to the debating team. He has received a Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award Gold for running a tutoring programme while at Scots, as well as winning the New Zealand Youth Award in the ‘Youth Enterprise’ category for his contribution to science education though his YouTube channel.

“While studying at Scots College, Andrew achieved a remarkable amount at high levels in a range of sporting, cultural and community activities… I congratulate Andrew on his accomplishments and look forward to his success in his chosen future path,” said Prime Minister Ardern.

As he accepted the award, Andrew spoke about the value of setting goals, and emphasised that the achievement wasn’t just a reflection of his hard work, but also of the guidance and support of his family and the staff at Scots College.

The Top Scholar Awards recognised the top students from the 2017 New Zealand Scholarship examinations. Acting NZQA Board Chair, Murray Strong, opened the ceremony and presented the Top Subject Scholar Awards. ‘The sheer talent, breadth and depth of success shown by this group of top scholars is truly inspirational. I know we can be confident that New Zealand will be in good hands with these future leaders.’
