Report into Level 2 Algebra examination complete

18 Jun 2020

The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) has published the final report of a review into a diagrammatical error in the 2019 Level 2 NCEA Mathematics and Statistics examination.

The error occurred in Question 2(d) of the NCEA Level 2 examination for Standard 91261 (Apply algebraic methods in solving problems). This was one of three standards in the Level 2 Mathematics and Statistics examination held on Thursday 21 November 2019.

NZQA commissioned the Review Panel of external and internal experts, including an external Chair and external subject matter expert, to determine how the error occurred, and why it was not identified before students sat the examination for the Level 2 Algebra standard.

The report can be downloaded here (PDF, 325KB).

While the Panel found nothing in the data to suggest that the error in Question 2(d) had a negative impact on the overall performance of this cohort of students, NZQA takes any error in an examination extremely seriously and will implement the review panel’s recommendations as a priority to ensure we provide the highest quality error-free examinations to students.
