Tertiary Education Strategy launched

13 Nov 2020

The Tertiary Education Strategy (TES) sets out the Government’s current and medium-term priorities, and long-term strategic direction for tertiary education. It is intended to address economic, social and environmental goals, and the development aspirations of Māori and other population groups. This TES has been developed following consultation in late 2019 with the tertiary education sector and other stakeholders on a draft TES set out in the Shaping a Stronger Education System with New Zealanders discussion document.

The TES priorities build on the Education and Training Act 2020, and increased investment in trades training and student wellbeing. Along with the Statement of National Education and Learning Priorities (NELP) which set the priorities for early learning and schooling, it contributes to the Government’s integrated approach to transforming the future of education.

The sharing of priorities between the NELP and the TES recognises that learners change and grow as they move through their education and that the education system needs to listen to them, adapt to their needs, and empower them to achieve their aspirations, whatever their age or stage of learning.

Full details of the National Education and Learning Priorities and the Tertiary Education strategy are available on the Ministry of Education’s website.
