Māori Performing Arts standard external moderation and assessment
This circular provides information and guidance to assessors of Māori Performing Arts.
Evidence to support Assessor judgements
An NZQA panel (including the National Moderator) attended several regional secondary school kapa haka competitions/events in 2019 to observe student performance against 11 Māori Performing Arts standards.
Following each event, NZQA sent a letter and observation form including the observers’ judgements to schools. The observers’ judgements can be used as evidence for Level 3 standard 22756 and the performance outcomes of the level 2 and 4 standards. However, students are also required to complete the rangahau (research) outcome to achieve the level 2 and 4 standards. To achieve 22756, evidence of rangahau is not required.
External Moderation
The following table provides information regarding the submission of material for external moderation.
Level | Consent to assess | Outcome 1 (Rangahau) | Outcome 2 (Demonstration/Performance) |
Level 2 | Yes | Required | Submit observation form |
Level 3 (22756) | Yes | Not required | Submit observation form |
Level 4 | Check you have consent to assess | Required | Submit observation form |
Assessors may disagree with the grades indicated on the observation form. In this case, the assessor will need to provide evidence that supports their judgements.
Assessment
For information regarding the process for gaining consent to assess for the level 4 standards, please speak to the Principal’s Nominee or your School Relationship Manager.
Students can be assessed against standard 22756 and against Outcome 2 of the level 2 and 4 standards at school or at an appropriate external event.
Credits from all Māori Performing Arts standards can contribute towards achievement of the NCEA qualifications.
