NCEA Level 1 Mathematics and Statistics 91027 Common Assessment Task in 2018
This circular provides information about:
- how to nominate the day(s) your school will assess the Mathematics Common Assessment Task (MCAT);
- how NZQA will provide assessment booklets; and
- the MCAT Administrative Guidelines for Schools.
MCAT assessment days
The MCAT may be assessed on Tuesday 18 September 2018 and/or Thursday 20 September 2018.
Candidates will have one 60-minute assessment session to complete the assessment. Schools may choose to hold the assessment on a single day or hold sessions on both days. For example, in a large school it may be impractical to assess all students on a single day.
What you need to do:
- nominate the day(s) on which you will hold the MCAT; and
- specify the number of assessment booklets, including any Te Reo Māori booklets, required on each day by completing and emailing the Nomination of MCAT Assessment Day form to examinations@nzqa.govt.nz no later than Wednesday 1 August 2018.
The total number of booklets requested for the school should match candidate entries in your 1 August 2018 data file submission to NZQA.
Delivery of assessment booklets and advice to office staff
Printed assessment booklets will be sent to schools by Tuesday 11 September 2018. These will arrive in boxes addressed to the Principal’s Nominee (PN) and be marked “Private and Confidential”. PNs must inform office staff to expect the arrival of the booklets to ensure that they are stored securely. Electronic versions of the assessment booklets will also be published online on the schools’ secure website, from Monday 17 September 2018.
Schools are reminded that:
- if they fail to inform NZQA of their nominated MCAT day, or change their MCAT day, they will not receive printed assessment booklets, and must download the booklets for the relevant day(s) from the secure website and print their own copies.
- if they have late entries, they may download and print extra copies of the assessment booklets.
- they must not use assessment booklets other than on their intended day.
- they must not use assessment booklets as revision materials or practice assessments.
- they may only hold the MCAT on 18 and/or 20 September.
- they may not hold the MCAT on 19 September.
- they must provide students with only one opportunity to sit the MCAT.
- failure to meet these requirements will invalidate student results.
Administrative Guidelines for Schools
“MCAT Administrative Guidelines for Schools” are now available on the NZQA Mathematics and Statistics resource page here. Schools need to be familiar with the requirements in these guidelines to ensure the integrity of the assessment.
