Unexpected Event Grades replace Emergency Grades

The Unexpected Event Grade process allows schools to request that NZQA apply grades from practice external standard assessment for multiple candidates where an unexpected event disrupts their examination session. From 2019, it replaces processes used when applying for emergency grades, or derived grades where many candidates are impacted.

The derived grade process where events impact on an individual or small group of students is unchanged.

For more information see Unexpected events grades.

Just as with derived grades, for an unexpected event grade, the school must provide NZQA with:

  • evidence of the event and its impact on the student(s);
  • grades based on authentic pre-existing standard-specific evidence that have been subject to a quality-assurance process and collected prior to the external examination period.

Application Process

NZQA’s Chief Executive approves the circumstances for awarding an unexpected event grade. In the first instance, the school should contact their School Relationship Manager for advice.
