Visual Arts External Level 3 and New Zealand Scholarship Portfolio Submissions

This circular provides information about:

  • Authenticity Declarations for Visual Arts submissions
  • Use of non-original material, including artist models, in submitted portfolios.

Authenticity Declaration completed by candidate

All candidates are required to complete an Authenticity Declaration as part of their portfolio submission for Level 3 and New Zealand Scholarship Visual Arts. The Authenticity Declaration is an undertaking from the candidate that the work in the portfolio is the candidate’s own, unless specifically declared by the candidate. Authenticity Declarations are to be completed electronically, then printed and signed.

For all portfolio submissions, Authenticity Declarations are required to be firmly glued to the back of the candidate portfolio prior to pick-up from the school. Candidates who submit a Digital Moving Image portfolio must submit the Declaration by email to Jake Fa’amalepe at NZQA.

The Submission Instructions provide further details about submission and authenticity.

Advice on use of non-original material, including artist models

In the Authenticity Declaration candidates are required to acknowledge explicit external sources. These include images taken directly from and/or recognisably attributable to other artists as part of the portfolio. It is acknowledged that it is appropriate for artists to draw upon other influences in their body of work but direct, or slightly modified, images must be referenced.

Teachers and candidates are advised to read the assessment reports and exemplars from 2015 for further comment regarding use of artist models.
