Managing internal assessment for students absent from school due to contact with Covid 19 - COVID-19 #1

Managing internal assessment for students absent from school due to contact with Covid 19

Use your missed and late assessments policy to determine your course of action where students choose or are required to self-isolate with Covid 19-like symptoms.

Things to consider are:

  • whether other forms of evidence could be used to substantiate the impact on a student. For example, if a doctor’s certificate is not available and the school administration tells the students to go home, this could be evidence.
  • establishing whether the student needs the assessment opportunity to maintain their qualifications pathway. If not, do not enter them for the assessment
  • rescheduling the assessment date or assessing them on their return to school.

Where these are not options:

  • check that teachers can assure you of the authenticity of the student’s work if they complete the assessment at home.

Ways to establish this include:

  • providing them with a different assessment task or context
  • verbally questioning them on their answers when they return to school to confirm it is their work

Other things to consider are how you will:

  • communicate this to staff, students and families, including any changes to your published policy
  • ensure that any policy change is consistently applied across all students impacted.

Please contact us for further information should students be impacted for a longer period than one assessment.
