Assessment Report

Level 1 Korean 2019

Standards 90898  90901

Part A: Commentary

Candidates who performed well had a better understanding of the finer details of the language used, and connected information well to support their answers based on the passage or text.

Answers made up predominantly of a direct translation or information based on guessing were not successful in showing understanding of the text.

Understanding the gist of the text may be enough for Achievement but, for higher grades, candidates need to use relevant information selected from the texts to justify their own explanations or viewpoints.

Part B: Report on standards

90898:  Demonstrate understanding of a variety of spoken Korean texts on areas of most immediate relevance

Candidates who were awarded Achievement commonly:

  • wrote brief answers with limited supporting detail
  • showed understanding of the basic information in the passage, but lacked development in responses
  • understood the gist of the text and could convey the general meaning, but missed details
  • had difficulty with some lexical items and phrases
  • provided only some or limited supporting detail from the text.

Candidates whose work was assessed as Not Achieved commonly:

  • wrote answers based on their own knowledge or experiences, rather than on what they had heard or read
  • wrote very brief answers
  • showed vague or only partial understanding of the passage or text.

Candidates who were awarded Achievement with Merit commonly:

  • supported their answers with some relevant details
  • showed understanding by providing developed answers
  • justified their choices with references from the passage or text.

Candidates who were awarded Achievement with Excellence commonly:

  • provided substantially detailed responses to the questions
