Format for the assessment

Candidates should use business theory, knowledge of a large business, and/or a case study to illustrate their answers.

A ‘large business’ refers to a business operating in New Zealand with more than 20 employees and/or with a regional or national significance.

Candidates are required to demonstrate understanding of a selection of the business knowledge, concepts, and content specified for each standard in the Assessment section of the Teaching and Learning Guide for Business Studies.

Candidates should also refer to the Clarifications to the Achievement Grades for level 2 for clarification and guidance of the level of responses required for Achievement, Achievement with Merit, and Achievement with Excellence.

The Key Concepts (enterprise, globalisation, citizenship, and sustainability) and the Māori Concepts (pūtake, tūranga, tikanga, kaitiakitanga, and rangatiratanga) are relevant to all achievement standards, and should be incorporated throughout a Business Studies programme.

Maori concepts that relate to business may be assessed. Where this occurs, candidates will be given a definition or explanation of the term in the examination paper, and they will be required to apply or explain the concept in relation to a specific business context. Candidates may refer to any Maori business concept for any answer where relevant.

Each of the three examinations will have ONE question with multiple parts, covering several aspects/topics from the Teaching and Learning Guidelines for the achievement standard. Candidates will not be required to write an essay, but for Achievement with Excellence, will be expected to write extended answers that involve justification.

The assessment is also available in digital format, which candidates will be able to complete instead of the equivalent paper assessment. Resources provided in the digital assessment will be text and / or static images. Further information about the 2019 digital external assessments can be found on the NZQA website.
