Instructions and questions will be in English and Cook Islands Māori.

Texts will relate to information, ideas, and opinions on topics of personal and / or community interest, for example:

  • community and relationships (friendships, neighbours, teams, school, church, etc.)
  • events and special occasions (social, cultural or historical)
  • sports and leisure
  • environment.

Specific information for individual achievement standards




Demonstrate understanding of a variety of spoken Cook Islands Māori texts on familiar matters



Number of credits


Candidates will listen and respond to recordings of three spoken texts, which they will hear as a whole and twice in sections. Candidates may make notes in the listening notes spaces provided.

The total duration of the recordings will be up to 45 minutes.




Demonstrate understanding of a variety of written and / or visual Cook Islands Māori text(s) on familiar matters



Number of credits


Candidates will read and respond to up to three written texts representative of different text types.
