Information relating to both achievement standards

A title and an introduction to the Latin passages will be given in English. Except for proper nouns, lower case will be used throughout the Latin passages.

A resource booklet containing a glossary in alphabetical order of all the words used in the Latin passage for each standard will be provided. The principal parts of all irregular verbs and all third conjugation verbs, the nominative and genitive singular of all third declension nouns and all irregular nouns, will be given in full. Personal pronouns will be glossed in the following way:

hic, haec, hoc this, he, she, it
ille, illa, illud that, he, she, it
ipse, ipsa, ipsum himself, herself, itself, themselves

Accidence and syntax may be modified appropriately for Curriculum Levels 7 and 8 and assistance will be given for structures beyond this level. For further explanation of linguistic and cultural content at these levels, refer to the Teaching and Learning Guide for Latin.

Translate authentic Latin text into English demonstrating understanding

The passage of authentic Latin text will be narrative prose of approximately 130–150 words and will be divided into paragraphs.




Analyse authentic Latin text demonstrating understanding



Number of credits


The passage of authentic Latin text will be poetry of approximately 12–15 lines, in hexameters.

The aspects for analysis are:

  • meaning
  • allusions, style, literary devices, and characterisation
  • identification and explanation of accidence and syntax
  • use of metre, including scansion of dactylic hexameters.
