Resources or information supplied

Candidates will be required to give an account of relevant Social Studies concepts for each standard. The key concepts for Social Studies are provided in the Senior Social Studies Teaching and Learning Guide.

Candidates will also be required to give an account of relevant points of view, values, and perspectives (a range, diverse) for each standard.

Format of the assessment

Planning space will be provided.

Candidates should respond by writing an essay or series of paragraph(s).

The assessment is also available in digital format, which candidates will be able to complete instead of the equivalent paper assessment. Resources provided in the digital assessment will be text and/or static images. Further information about the 2019 digital external assessments can be found on the NZQA website.

Context details

The context provided in the resource booklet will be based on conflict that arisen over social issues in sport.

Candidate response

Candidates will be expected to analyse the resources provided and use the skills that they have learnt during their Social Studies course.

Format of the assessment

There is a significant change in the structure of the examination question compared to that of previous years.

Candidates will be required to use the skills that they have learnt during their Social Studies course. 

At least TWO of the following types of intervention will be included in the examination:

  • the intervention of individuals in a conflict
  • the intervention of government(s) in a conflict
  • the intervention of international organisations in a conflict.

Candidates will be required to describe one or more intervention(s) in their response. 

Not all aspects of the explanatory notes will be addressed in the examination question.

The society used by candidates must be real (existing presently or in the past).
