Literacy and Numeracy for Adults Assessment Tool evidence
Show Literacy and Numeracy unit standards main page
The Literacy and Numeracy for Adults Assessment Tool (Assessment Tool) measures aspects of a learner’s literacy and/or numeracy competency against the Adult Literacy and Numeracy Learning Progressions. It was commissioned by the New Zealand Tertiary Education Commission as part of a suite of resources designed to assist adults studying in the tertiary sector. Information about the Assessment Tool and Learning Progressions can be accessed from the National Centre of Literacy and Numeracy for Adults.
For standards 26622, 26623, 26624 and 26627, a learner’s results from the relevant Literacy or Numeracy assessment from the Assessment Tool may be admissible as evidence for one of the three separate activities required for each standard (refer requirements below).
In order for this evidence to be admissible, attestation is needed from the assessor that the Assessment Tool result is the learner’s own work and was achieved without assistance. For national external moderation purposes, this attestation must be provided either on the Assessed Work cover sheet for the learner or on the learner’s Learner Assessment Report or Learner Progress Report.
Please note that a learner’s portfolio for each Literacy or Numeracy standard must, as a whole, reflect (or exceed) the required step/koru of the relevant learning progression. (Refer Clarifications that apply to all Literacy and Numeracy unit standards.) This means that other evidence, beyond the Learner Assessment Report, included in the learner’s portfolio must also reflect (or exceed) the required step/koru.
Standard 26622 (version 3) Write to communicate for a purpose and audience
The assessment result from the Assessment Tool Writing assessment may be included as one piece of evidence in a learner’s portfolio for this standard, subject to the following:
- All requirements of the standard must be met in each of the three texts written (refer explanatory note 3). Therefore, the text written for the Writing assessment must meet all requirements of the standard.
- Minimum step and scale score: To be admissible as evidence for one of the three separate activities, a learner’s assessment result must meet or exceed learning progression step four and scale score of 571.
The learner’s written text for the Assessment Tool Writing assessment must be submitted in the learner’s portfolio for moderation, as well as their Learner Assessment Report or Learner Progress Report. (Please note, this text could not be used to justify a ‘Not achieved’ grade, unless it met the requirements of explanatory note 6 – that the learner has been given the opportunity to plan, compose, revise, and edit their writing. Refer standard 26622 clarification.)
Standard 26623 (version 3) Use number to solve problems
The assessment result from any of the four Assessment Tool Numeracy assessment options (General numeracy, Number knowledge, Number strategies and measurement, or Snapshot numeracy) may be included as one piece of evidence in a learner’s portfolio for this standard, subject to the following:
- All requirements of the standard must be evidenced through the minimum of two other activities submitted in the portfolio.
- Minimum step and scale score: To be admissible as evidence from one of the three separate activities, a learner’s assessment result must meet or exceed the learning progression step five and scale score of 596.
The learner’s Learner Assessment Report or Learner Progress Report for the Assessment Tool assessment must be submitted in the portfolio for moderation.
Standard 26624 (version 3) Read texts with understanding
The assessment result from the Assessment Tool Reading assessment may be included as one piece of evidence in a learner’s portfolio for this standard, subject to the following:
- All requirements of the standard must be evidenced through the minimum of two other activities submitted in the portfolio.
- Minimum step and scale score: To be admissible as evidence from one of the three separate activities, a learner’s assessment result must meet or exceed the learning progression step four and scale score of 608.
The learner’s Learner Assessment Report or Learner Progress Report for the Assessment Tool assessment must be submitted in the portfolio for moderation.
Standard 26627 (version 3) Use measurement to solve problems
The assessment result from the Assessment Tool Number strategies and measurement assessment may be included as one piece of evidence in a learner’s portfolio for this standard, subject to the following:
- All requirements of the standard must be evidenced through the minimum of two other activities submitted in the portfolio.
- Minimum step and scale score: To be admissible as evidence from one of the three separate activities, a learner’s assessment result must meet or exceed the learning progression step five and scale score of 596.
The learner’s Learner Assessment Report or Learner Progress Report for the Assessment Tool assessment must be submitted in the portfolio for moderation.
