The resources below contain examples of candidate work submitted in 2016 for verification of assessment for the Visual Arts Achievement Standard 91321 Produce a systematic body of work that shows understanding of art making conventions and ideas within painting. The purpose of this resource is to assist art teachers prepare their teaching programmes and their students for assessment.
Excellence
These portfolios have been verified as within the Excellence grade range.
These portfolios present evidence that meet the criteria consistent with The New Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 2007. Criteria relate to the following strands in Visual Arts, Level 6: Understanding the Arts in Context; Developing Practical Knowledge, Developing Ideas: Communicating and Interpreting.
These candidates have shown the ability to:
- demonstrate a clear understanding of conventions of street art and contemporary practice
- reference a range of artist models to advance ideas across the submission
- demonstrate a fluent control of a range of painting media
- intelligently combine stencils with mixed media practice
- sympathetically choose a colour palette, juxtaposing pop art and graffiti conventions, alongside monotone posturized figures.

This portfolio has been verified as placed in the middle of
Excellence grade range as it clearly fulfils the criteria
for Excellence:
- this candidate has shown the ability to quickly establish a clear intention in the submission
- juxtapositions of viewpoint, scale, shifts in perspective plus media and technique ensures the development and advancement of ideas in a confident and distinct manner
- the purposeful use of collage at the start of the second board regenerates earlier concepts and provides opportunities to develop the idea in diverse directions
- the painting throughout the submission displays an assured fluency with a range of media.

This portfolio has presented sufficient evidence to achieve Excellence but would be placed more securely in the grade range if:
- a more confident starting sequence had been utilised to provide a greater range of options to extend the work more comfortably into Excellence criteria.
Merit
These portfolios have been verified as within the Merit grade range.
These portfolios present evidence that meet the criteria consistent with The New Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 2007. Criteria relate to the following strands in Visual Arts, Level 6: Understanding the Arts in Context; Developing Practical Knowledge, Developing Ideas: Communicating and Interpreting.
These candidates have shown the ability to:
- produce a systematic body of work that shows understanding of art making conventions and ideas within painting.

This portfolio is approaching Excellence as it shows some evidence of:
- understanding of the contextual purpose of the investigation and consciously moves pictorial elements around in relation to the artist models (Lichtenstein and post pop)
- an artist model that is extended and interpreted in surprising and intelligent ways
- use of media that is convincingly integrated into the exploration of pictorial structure.
To be awarded Excellence it would need more evidence of:
- attention to the systematic ordering, especially in Board 2, to show greater fluency in the development and regeneration of ideas.

This portfolio has been verified as placed in the middle of the Merit grade range as it clearly fulfils the criteria for Merit:
- the submission is purposeful and the student has made decisions about individual related works to form a sequence and advance ideas
- they have developed and extended their ideas appropriate to the purpose of the investigation
- the shift from physical painting to digital painting is appropriate to the investigation and demonstrates a competent understanding of art making conventions
- the submission displays sound decisions
regarding editing and ordering that is
appropriate to the investigation.

This portfolio has presented sufficient evidence to achieve Merit but would be placed more securely in the grade range if:
- the candidate had shown a greater understanding of art making conventions and ideas within painting
- the candidate had displayed more competent handling of the media and techniques with understanding of the selected convention. However, the candidate has made decisions that are clearly related to the establishment of a pictorial and conceptual purpose.
Achieved
These portfolios have been verified as within the Achieved grade range.
These portfolios present evidence that meet the criteria consistent with The New Zealand Curriculum.
Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 2007. Criteria relate to the following strands in Visual Arts, Level 6 Understanding the Arts in Context, Developing Practical Knowledge, Developing Ideas: Communicating and Interpreting.

This portfolio is approaching Merit level performance as it shows some evidence of:
- purposeful decision-making in how it reduces the colour palette and simplifies into painted planes
- an architectural proposition that is consistent with the whole portfolio.
To be awarded Merit it would need more evidence of:
- an understanding of paint convention - the development of this is limited
- competent use of media.

- there must be more advancement of a variety of ideas through a series of work on Board 2, to create more shifts as the developments are limited.

This portfolio has been verified as Achieved:
- it establishes its issue at the start of board one and builds on the idea of the effect of man on nature and uses a range of conventions. However, the control of media is at the lower end of the curriculum level
- it is not systematic and some of the sequencing is not ordered logically/is random.
This portfolio has presented sufficient evidence to Achieve but would be placed more securely in the Achieved grade range if:
- the final two works on Board 2 were more resolved and explored, or regenerated ideas from board one.
