The resources below contain examples of candidate work submitted in 2016 for verification of assessment for the Visual Arts Achievement Standard 91323 Produce a systematic body of work that shows understanding of art making conventions and ideas within printmaking. The purpose of this resource is to assist art teachers prepare their teaching programmes and their students for assessment.

Excellence

These portfolios have been verified as within the Excellence grade range.

These portfolios present evidence that meet the criteria consistent with The New Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 2007. Criteria relate to the following strands in Visual Arts,
Level: 6 Understanding the Arts in Context; Developing Practical Knowledge; Developing Ideas; Communicating and Interpreting.

These candidates have shown the ability to:

  • successfully produce a fluent body of work that develops, clarifies and regenerates ideas throughout the submission
  • employ printmaking conventions successfully and with fluency to support the pictorial and thematic ideas.

This portfolio has been verified as placed in the middle of the Excellence grade range as it clearly fulfils the criteria for Excellence:

  • has a clear thematic idea that generates and develops ideas early in the submission. This provides for a highly individual approach in the regeneration of images in Board 2
  • consistently, throughout the submission, demonstrates a high level of fluency in the use of printmaking conventions through the subtle use of textured and layered surfaces combining a variety of techniques including dry point stencilling, collage and transfer processes that drive the development of the works.

This portfolio has presented sufficient evidence to achieve Excellence but would be placed more securely in the grade range if:

  • the final works on Board 2 showed more considered use of the combination of text, imagery and colour
  • the candidate had identified additional possibilities and explored possible relationships with negative space evident in the final two works on Board 1.

Merit

These portfolios have been verified as within the Merit grade range.

These portfolios present evidence that meet the criteria consistent with The New Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 2007. Criteria relate to the following strands in Visual Arts,
Level: 6 Understanding the Arts in Context; Developing Practical Knowledge; Developing Ideas; Communicating and Interpreting.

These candidates have shown the ability to:

  • purposely select and use art-making conventions which clearly identify and develop ideas to be investigated early in Board 1
  • make decisions that clearly advance the pictorial and conceptual purpose of a body of work
  • competently use media and techniques appropriate to the investigation.

This portfolio has been verified as placed in the middle of the Merit grade as it clearly fulfils the criteria for Merit:

  • compositions throughout the folio clearly express and extend ideas related to urban living and ocean pollution in a wide range of ways
  • conceptual ideas continue to journey and extend throughout the folio without repetition
  • thoughtful visual links are made between works, which are clear evidence of purposeful decision making.

To be awarded Excellence it would need more evidence of:

  • extended technique in the print medium, chosen, such as tonal mark making and inking techniques

This portfolio has been verified as placed in the middle of the Merit grade range as it clearly fulfils the criteria for Merit:

  • it introduces imagery early in Board 1 which establishes a range of ideas and viewpoints within its political theme, from a range of perspectives (leader, soldier, and citizen)
  • it introduces the idea of a grid/framing device at the start of board 1 developing and then extending the use of this device in a range of ways throughout the folio which is then clearly extended in the final diptych work
  • it clearly identifies and uses colour as a purposeful device to develop and extend ideas.

This portfolio has present sufficient evidence to achieve Merit but would be placed more securely in the grade range if:

  • the initial proposition had provided more opportunity to develop and advance pictorial and personal ideas
  • the candidate had maintained use of printmaking skills and techniques more consistently in the second half of Board 2
  • the candidate had further extended ideas by introducing a new print block to include in the final sequence rather than relying on reworked imagery from earlier in the folio.

Achieved

These portfolios have been verified as within the Achieved grade range.

These portfolios present evidence that meet the criteria consistent with The New Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 2007. Criteria relate to the following strands in Visual Arts,
Level: 6 Understanding the Arts in Context; Developing Practical Knowledge; Developing Ideas; Communicating and Interpreting.

These candidates have shown the ability to:

  • generate and develop sufficient series of pictorial ideas at the expected level of the curriculum
  • use printmaking conventions appropriate to the narrative or proposition.

This portfolio is approaching Merit level performance as it shows some evidence of:

  • purposefully identifying pictorial ideas early in the sequence to inform decisions made on Board 2
  • some competency using media to support the proposition: in this case woodcut.

To be awarded Merit it would need more evidence of:

  • a greater range of ideas of Board 1 to further develop and extend on Board 2
  • competency of printmaking skills on Board 2 to sit comfortably in the Merit range.

This portfolio has been verified as placed in the middle of the Achieved grade range as it clearly fulfils the criteria for Achievement:

  • establishes a series of sequential ideas that are connected through pictorial decisions and the narrative
  • uses appropriate printmaking conventions including intaglio and mono-printing that supports the pictorial proposition.

This portfolio has presented sufficient evidence to Achieve but would be placed more securely in the Achieved grade range if:

  • more evidence was provided on Board 2 such as 2 or more plates or ideas that show understanding of the pictorial decisions made on Board 1
  • media and techniques were used more consistently through the entire submission and at the level of the curriculum.
