The resources below contain examples of candidate work submitted in 2016 for verification of assessment for the Visual Arts Achievement Standard 91324 Produce a systematic body of work that shows understanding of art making conventions and ideas within sculpture. The purpose of this resource is to assist art teachers prepare their teaching programmes and their students for assessment.

Excellence

These portfolios have been verified as within the Excellence grade range.

These portfolios present evidence that meet the criteria consistent with The New Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 2007. Criteria relate to the following strands in Visual Arts,
Level: 6 Understanding the Arts in Context; Developing Practical Knowledge; Developing Ideas; Communicating and Interpreting.

These candidates have shown the ability to:

  • comprehensively manage and develop unique manner relevant to their chosen themes and ideas
  • integrate a range of sculpture conventions appropriately and successfully to support the clarification and regeneration of ideas.

This portfolio has been verified as placed in the middle of the Excellence grade range as it clearly fulfils the criteria for Excellence:

  • through critical selection and reflection of previous work to advance ideas in new but relevant directions
  • through a fluent and diverse approach to the conventions of sculptural practice
  • through an assured use of media and techniques appropriate to specific phases of the investigation.

This portfolio has presented sufficient evidence to achieve Excellence but would be placed more securely in the grade range if:

  • the candidate reflected more closely on previous works, identifying best options to advance ideas in a distinct/new or diverse directions
  • the candidate paid closer attention to the documentation of sculptures and how a viewer might physically respond or view the work in an exhibition (three dimensional) context; this can help to ensure that the nuances of sculptures are fully realised/appreciated.

Merit

These portfolios have been verified as within the Merit grade range.

These portfolios present evidence that meet the criteria consistent with The New Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 2007. Criteria relate to the following strands in Visual Arts,
Level: 6 Understanding the Arts in Context; Developing Practical Knowledge; Developing Ideas; Communicating and Interpreting.

These candidates have shown the ability to:

  • produce a body of related works that advance ideas
  • develop and extend ideas through different sculptural media and techniques
  • competently use media and techniques appropriate to their concept.

This portfolio is approaching Excellence level performance as it shows some evidence of:

  • using sculptural techniques fluently appropriate to each phase of their investigation
  • the ability to reflect on previous work to advance ideas in new directions.

To be awarded Excellence it would need more evidence of:

  • identification of the best options from previous work and purposeful selection of ideas and concepts to advance and clarify several new ideas
  • exploration of different sculptural conventions such as performance or site specific installation works
  • exploration and experimentation with the nails, plaster, and place in the final works.

This portfolio has been verified as placed in the middle of the Merit grade range as it clearly fulfils the criteria for Merit:

  • the candidate purposefully selects sculptural conventions to generate, develop and extend ideas through a series of sculptural pieces and explorations
  • decisions have been made with sculptural techniques and folio board layout showing pictorial and conceptual purpose.

This portfolio has present sufficient evidence to achieve Merit but would be placed more securely in the grade range if:

  • the wide range of techniques demonstrated were explored further in Board 2 through conventions such as scale, repetition or mass in a larger area
  • images selected were purposefully distilled representations of the idea development on Board 2
  • further control of media was demonstrated in the extension of ideas.

Achieved

These portfolios have been verified as within the Achieved grade range.

These portfolios present evidence that meet the criteria consistent with The New Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 2007. Criteria relate to the following strands in Visual Arts,
Level: 6 Understanding the Arts in Context; Developing Practical Knowledge; Developing Ideas; Communicating and Interpreting.

These candidates have shown the ability to:

  • produce a systematic body of work that employs relevant sculptural conventions
  • use identified conventions with some proficiency
  • establish an idea or proposition within which to explore.

This portfolio is approaching Merit level performance as it shows some evidence of:

  • being initially purposeful with its investigation from the outset
  • competent media use and fabrication.

To be awarded Merit it would need more evidence of:

  • clearer clarification through documentation of the sequential and relevant evolving nature of the works on the later part of Board 2
  • conventions of sculptural practice being adhered to
  • stronger decisions being made to clearly extend the concepts and approaches with purpose
  • regeneration of ideas that extend the proposition further with purpose.

This portfolio has been verified as placed in the middle of the Achieved grade range as it clearly fulfils the criteria for Achievement:

  • the submission clearly uses a strong conceptual understanding to underpin the sculptural investigation
  • the candidate competently uses media and techniques of sculptural practise appropriate to the investigation
  • some decisions relevant to the conceptual standpoint that methodically move the work along are being made.

This portfolio has presented sufficient evidence to Achieve but would be placed more securely in the Achieved grade range if:

  • it built upon the investigations earlier to solidify the foundations from which to develop ideas.
  • a broader investigation of the approach was applied and some reflection on the potential for extending and developing work was demonstrated.
  • a consideration of locational context was engaged with when recording the final works.
