The resources below contain examples of candidate work submitted in 2015 for verification of assessment for the Visual Arts Achievement Standard 91320 Produce a systematic body of work that shows understanding of art making conventions and ideas within design. The purpose of this resource is to assist art teachers prepare their teaching programmes and their students for assessment.

MOVING IMAGE

There is 1 separate Moving Image exemplar available.

It is important to note that these are 'Moving Image' presentations. Please refer to assessment specifications for AS91320. These specifications have changed from 2012 to 2015, and now do not include a slideshow. The new mode of presentation is in movie format: MPEG (mpg, mpeg, mp4); QuickTime (.mov); AVI, or WMV. Excellence

These portfolios have been verified as within the Excellence grade range.

They present evidence that meets the criteria consistent with The New Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 2007. Criteria relate to the following strands in Visual Arts, Level 7: Understanding the Arts in Context; Developing Practical Knowledge; Developing Ideas; Communicating and Interpreting.

These candidates have shown the ability to:

  • select and use appropriate art making conventions to frame the investigation fluently and to drive the development of ideas
  • reflect on and identify best options from previous work and use these to advance ideas in distinct/ new or diverse directions
  • use a range of media and techniques assuredly, each appropriate to specific phases of the investigation.

Student 1

This portfolio has been verified in the Excellence grade range as it clearly fulfils the criterion for Excellence by:

  • using a range of media and techniques to frame the investigation 
  • consistently identifying best solutions and further developing them successfully
  • providing cohesion within and throughout briefs in terms of colour and aesthetic
  • exploring a wide range of options confidently with understanding showing fluency throughout the submission

Student 2

This portfolio has presented sufficient evidence to achieve with Excellence. 

To be placed more securely in the grade range it would need more evidence of:

  • making decisions with more reflective and critical analysis as solutions progress
  • regenerating by consistently identifying the best options to further advance ideas 
  • clarifying ideas with good decisions made at end-points,  for example; large scale works reveal the candidate’s need to address negative space and large areas of saturated colour.

Merit

These portfolios have been verified as within the Merit grade range.

They present evidence that meets the criteria consistent with The New Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 2007. Criteria relate to the following strands in Visual Arts, Level 7: Understanding the Arts in Context; Developing Practical Knowledge; Developing Ideas; Communicating and Interpreting.

These candidates have shown the ability to:

  • produce a purposeful body of work that shows understanding of art making conventions and ideas within design
  • make decisions that are clearly related to conceptual purpose
  • show competent use of media and techniques
  • show clear extension of ideas

Student 3

This portfolio is approaching Excellence level performance as it shows some evidence of:

  • controlling the media used with facility
  • demonstrating a level of clarity in the initial proposition; its generation and use of pictorial and typographic elements
  • using original imagery instead of found imagery to enhance the pictorial investigation

To be awarded Excellence, it would need more evidence of:

  • developing a greater range of ideas through an emphasis on the drawing process
  • considering a wider range of options within each brief
  • reflecting on and identifying best options from previous works and using them to advance ideas in new directions

Student 4

This portfolio has been verified within the Merit grade range as it clearly fulfils the criterion for Merit by:

  • maintaining a relatively cohesive aesthetic across the submission showing clear purpose
  • using design media and art making conventions with confidence
  • making consistently logical decisions in terms of ordering/editing

Student 5

This portfolio has presented sufficient evidence to achieve with Merit. To be placed more securely in the grade range it would need more evidence of:

  • applying the design aesthetic consistency across briefs with greater clarity in the presentation of the briefs
  • making better critical decisions in the selecting/ordering and editing process resulting in stronger designs
  • demonstrating an understanding of established practices beyond emulation, further building on these and experimenting in developments

Achieved

These portfolios have been verified as within the Achieved grade range.

They present evidence that meets the criteria consistent with The New Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 2007. Criteria relate to the following strands in Visual Arts, Level 7: Understanding the Arts in Context; Developing Practical Knowledge; Developing Ideas; Communicating and Interpreting.

 These candidates have shown the ability to:

  • produce a body of work that shows some understanding of art-making conventions in design.
  • demonstrate a development of ideas through the design process.
  • work in a systematic way, making some decisions relating to conceptual purpose.
  • use appropriate media and techniques appropriate to purpose.

Student 6

This portfolio is approaching Merit level performance as it shows some evidence of:

  • making purposeful decisions in keeping with a pictorial and conceptual purpose
  • developing a broader range of ideas and outcomes with clear advancement of ideas
  • understanding and applying established design practices

To be awarded Merit, it would need more evidence of:

  • making purposeful decisions more consistently across the folio
  • generating and using a broader range of subject matter / pictorial elements related to the theme. This could include; technological and gaming imagery, as well as nature imagery to draw upon and support the extension of ideas

Student 7

This portfolio has been verified within the Achieved grade range as it clearly fulfils the criteria for Achievement by:

  • making decisions in relation to a clearly defined pictorial and conceptual purpose
  • using design conventions to frame the investigation and to provide a foundation for development
  • showing evidence of a systematic method within and between briefs
  • using media and techniques appropriate to the purpose of the investigation

Student 8

This portfolio has presented sufficient evidence to Achieve. To be placed more securely in the grade range it would need more evidence of:

  • documenting generative ideas and imagery at the start of panel one to provide a folio framework (e.g. source material and established practices
  • exploring ideas further beyond the initial concept drawings
  • considering the size/scale of work more carefully, including the ordering/editing of final work
  • using media and techniques more consistently throughout the folio, appropriate to the expected curriculum level
