The resources below contain examples of candidate work submitted in 2015 for verification of assessment for the Visual Arts Achievement Standard 91321 Produce a systematic body of work that shows understanding of art making conventions and ideas within painting. The purpose of this resource is to assist art teachers prepare their teaching programmes and their students for assessment.

Excellence

These portfolios have been verified as within the Excellence grade range.

They present evidence that meets the criteria consistent with The New Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 2007. Criteria relate to the following strands in Visual Arts, Level 7: Understanding the Arts in Context; Developing Practical Knowledge; Developing Ideas; Communicating and Interpreting.

These candidates have shown the ability to:

  • produce a fluent body of work by editing, ordering and identifying the best options to present sequentially
  • reflect on individual related works and use this critical analysis to make informed decisions
  • regenerate ideas appropriate to the purpose of the investigation
  • investigate the concept or pictorial proposition comprehensively to establish a depth and range of ideas in an individual and unique manner.
  • use wet and dry painting media and other specific art making conventions appropriately and with assurance at each stage of the investigation

This portfolio has been verified in the Excellence grade range as it clearly fulfils the criterion for Excellence by:

  • using a range of media with assurance, demonstrating risk taking, confidence and individuality
  • exploring painting conventions through a fluent and diverse approach
  • editing, selecting and ordering individual related works to demonstrate criticality and informed purpose
  • selecting elements and conventions to integrate and regenerate throughout the submission

This portfolio has presented sufficient evidence to achieve with Excellence. To be placed more securely in the grade range it would need more evidence of:

  • regenerating ideas within the scope of the proposition
  • developing a broader visual narrative that could be more diversely extended and regenerated
  • using painting conventions to show sustained, consistent fluency

 

 

 

 

 Merit

These portfolios have been verified as within the Merit grade range.

They present evidence that meets the criteria consistent with The New Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 2007. Criteria relate to the following strands in Visual Arts, Level 7: Understanding the Arts in Context; Developing Practical Knowledge; Developing Ideas; Communicating and Interpreting.

These candidates have shown the ability to:

  • produce a purposeful body of work
  • make decisions about individual related works to form a series
  • edit and order the work sequentially to clarify and extend the ideas
  • develop and extend ideas appropriate to the purpose of the investigation
  • use media and techniques competently and with understanding of the selected conventions

This portfolio is approaching Excellence level performance as it shows some evidence of:

  • using wet media and colour with consistent facility.
  • extending and clarifying ideas, particularly on panel two by reflecting on the different options generated on panel one

To be awarded Excellence, it would need more evidence of:

  • understanding of conventions so they could be used to critically extend and regenerate the picture making ideas
  • making fluent decisions about the use of facial expression, figurative scale and proportion

This portfolio has been verified in the Merit grade range as it clearly fulfils the criterion for Merit by:

  • using media confidently with a clear understanding of the selected painting conventions
  • ordering ideas logically with evidence of purpose in each decision made to extend the ideas
  • relating each piece of work to the overall conceptual purpose

This portfolio has  presented sufficient evidence to achieve with Merit. To be placed more securely in the grade range it would need more evidence of:

  • developing and advancing pictorial and personal ideas supported by a broader initial proposition that provides more opportunities for development
  • using media and processes selectively and purposefully to extend the ideas and clarify the pictorial proposition

 

 

 

 

Achieved

These portfolios have been verified as within the Achieved grade range.

They present evidence that meets the criteria consistent with The New Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 2007. Criteria relate to the following strands in Visual Arts, Level 7: Understanding the Arts in Context; Developing Practical Knowledge; Developing Ideas; Communicating and Interpreting.

 These candidates have shown the ability to:

  • produce a systematic body of work
  • make individual related works to form a series
  • edit and order the work sequentially
  • generate and develop ideas appropriate to the purpose of the investigation
  • use media and techniques with understanding of the selected conventions

This portfolio is approaching Merit level performance as it shows some evidence of:

  • making decisions clearly related to the topic thereby advancing the pictorial proposition in a consistent and well-ordered body of work

To be awarded Merit, it would need more evidence of:

  • selecting from the painting conventions to purposefully advance the proposition and extend ideas beyond the rearrangement of the key pictorial elements

This portfolio has been verified in the Achieved grade range as it clearly fulfils the criterion for Achievement by:

  • using media and techniques (including collage and sgraffito) with understanding of the selected painting conventions
  • developing ideas sequentially with a clearly evident pictorial proposition related to the use of media and three dimensional space

  • handling paint media and techniques with more understanding of tonal modelling and other painting conventions
