Excellence

These portfolios have been verified as within the Excellence grade range.

They present evidence that meets the criteria consistent with The New Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 2007. Criteria relate to the following strands in Visual Arts, Level 7: Understanding the Arts in Context; Developing Practical Knowledge; Developing Ideas; Communicating and Interpreting.

These candidates have shown the ability to:

  • investigate an idea broadly, developing a strong pictorial proposition which allows for a range and depth of ideas
  • use photography conventions, media and techniques with a sophisticated understanding of photography practices alongside facility with tools and techniques
  • reflect on previous successful investigations and recognise successful ideas, advancing from these with assured confidence
  • demonstrate clear and critical understanding of the use of editing and sequencing to show how works build on earlier series, integrating and regenerating a range of ideas

Student 1

This portfolio has been verified in the Excellence grade range as it clearly fulfils the criterion for Excellence by.

  • paying critical attention to the visual hierarchy of ideas being regenerated through the narrative proposition
  • testing, reflecting upon, resolving and revisiting the narrative and sequences repeatedly to clearly regenerate ideas on panel 2
  • sizing and sequencing of the layout with critical assuredness, demonstrating fluency in the photographic media and techniques as well as a strong understanding of photography conventions

Entire Folio (JPG, 4.8MB)

Student 2

This portfolio has presented sufficient evidence to achieve with Excellence. To be placed more securely in the grade range it would need more evidence of:

  • making critical decisions about layout in relation to the pictorial ideas explored, rather than relying on the narrative to drive development
  • considering space between works for readability of pictorial development within the narrative, ensuring that sequences can be discerned from singular works
  • clarifying and regenerating ideas more critically and fluently within the narrative

Merit

These portfolios have been verified as within the Merit grade range.

  • establish a folio proposition that has a clear pictorial intention from the outset
  • make purposeful and conscious decisions about the editing, sizing and sequencing of the work to enhance the folio proposition and demonstrate extension of ideas
  • use photography conventions with sound understanding alongside competent use of related media and photographic techniques
  • reference artist models implicitly, thereby providing options which support the candidate to purposefully explore and extend ideas

Student 3

This portfolio is approaching Excellence level performance as it shows some evidence of:

  • developing ideas confidently around the tool subject matter on panel 2
  • identifying new and diverse directions to extend pictorial ideas through the subject and attempting to regenerate pictorial ideas
  • using photography conventions, media and techniques with some fluency

To be awarded Excellence, it would need more evidence of:

  • editing of the panels supported by a greater level of critical analysis and reflection; critical decisions about reducing repetitive picture making on panel 1 could have condensed development providing more opportunity for regeneration on panel 2

Student 4

This portfolio has been verified in the Merit grade range as it clearly fulfils the criterion for Merit by:

  • establishing a clear folio proposition and pictorial intentions supported by purposeful editing decisions
  • using a range of contemporary photography practices and conventions successfully to advance the pictorial investigation
  • extending ideas clearly through the exploration of light, shadow and depth of field on panel 2

Entire Folio (JPG, 2.8MB)

Student 5

This portfolio has presented sufficient evidence to achieve with Merit. To be placed more securely in the grade range it would need more evidence of:

  • making more purposeful decisions about the
  • ordering, sizing and sequencing of the work
  • editing imagery to reduce works less relevant to the investigation and advancement of ideas,  for example; the top and bottom row of panel 1 and the vertical row on panel 2
  • reflecting on series/sequences to recognise relative strengths  and using size to denote this, for example; the series at the top of panel 2 successfully underpins the investigation and could have been given greater emphasis

Achievement

These portfolios have been verified as within the Achieved grade range.

  • use the camera to generate and develop ideas around a singular subject matter and/or idea
  • use photographic media and techniques (viewpoint shifts/camera functions) to show a basic understanding of photography conventions
  • make some decisions about the selecting, editing and ordering of work to show understanding of the grouping of related imagery to show a systematic approach

Student 6

This portfolio is approaching Merit level performance as it shows some evidence of:

  • handling photographic techniques with competency and confidence through use of colour and subtle shifts in viewpoint
  • sequencing work in a linear fashion, demonstrating some purposeful decision making
  • attempting to extend ideas on panel 2 through images of sculptural explorations of botanical arrangements frozen in ice

To be awarded Merit, it would need more evidence of:

  • editing related works more purposefully on panel 1 to reduce repetition  and establish a broader initial folio proposition by introducing a range of subject matter such as the statue, spider webs and water droplets -  thereby allowing space for additional evidence of extension on panel 2
  • exploring a greater range/depth of photography conventions such as; translucency, changing view point, scale, texture and context to demonstrate purposeful extension of ideas supported by a broader range of artist models

Student 7

This portfolio has been verified in the Achieved grade range as it clearly fulfils the criterion for Achievement by:

  • using the camera to demonstrate an understanding of photographic conventions such as: depth of field, light/shadow, blurring movement and digital layering
  • making decisions about the introduction of selective colour and the use of movement to explore and develop the folio idea
  • editing work to demonstrate a systematic approach with clear generation and development of ideas

Student 8

This portfolio has presented sufficient evidence to Achieve. To be placed more securely in the grade range it would need more evidence of:

  • investigating a wider range of ideas initially to enable greater subsequent development
  • editing images to reduce repetition and show more development of pictorial ideas
  • sequencing work more clearly to show the systematic development of ideas
