The Building Service Contractors' Industry Training Organisation has completed the review of the unit standards listed above that were registered in December 1988.

Summary of review and consultation process
An advisory group was formed with specialist carpet cleaners, suppliers to the industry, and trainers involved. They reviewed the unit standards in detail and revised definitions and terminology to reflect world-wide changes in the carpet cleaning industry. As part of the consultation process various drafts went out to industry for comment and feedback. The responses received from industry were incorporated in an ongoing process of refining the changes. Industry best practice guidelines were incorporated into the revised unit standards where appropriate. Ranges were broadened to include a greater range of possible options.
Main changes resulting from the review
The review process has resulted in the following changes to the unit standards.
· Ranges have been extended.
· Special notes have been made more specific in regards to definitions of stains and spots.
· Performance criteria have been modified to be more specific.
In addition, four new unit standards were developed to recognise skills in the areas of topical treatments, colour repair and restoration, repairs and reinstallation, and treating odours. The new standards are listed in the table at the end of this report.
