Summary of review and consultation process
The Glass Advisory Group of the Joinery Industry Training Organisation undertook a review of the Glass and Glazing qualification and the unit standards that make up that qualification in mid 2001.
The group met and exchanged information as part of a review of the existing qualifications and unit standards in the glass and glazing area. Over 2001-2 the advisory group consulted with industry organisations including the Glass Association of New Zealand and the Window Association of New Zealand, the Glass Institute, and glass and glazing company representatives. The review outcomes were presented and discussed at the national Glass and Glazing Conference in March 2003.
The group identified the following major requirements:
· The need for an industry wide introductory certificate at level 2.
· The need for revision and restructuring of many of the unit standards in the Flat Glass domain.
· The need for revision and restructuring of the National Certificate in Flat Glass with strands in Glazing, Decorative, Processing and Automotive. This should be replaced with new National Certificates for each of the Strands.
· A new National Certificate in Glass and Glazing (Introduction) (Level 2) would then provide the common entry point and foundation for all of the new Certificates.
Main changes resulting from the unit standard review
Category B reviews
Fourteen unit standards required changes to incorporate new technology and other industry requirements, new or revised special notes, and new entry requirements. Of these, four unit standards required new titles, and one unit standard required a reduction in the number of credits.
Category C and D reviews
Fifteen unit standards have been designated expiring and have been replaced with new unit standards, and two unit standards have been designated expiring and have not been replaced.
New unit standards
In addition to the replacement unit standards, 10 new unit standards have been developed for the Flat Glass domain.
Unit standards categorised as category C or D expire at the end of December 2005
