Review of Electricity Supply qualifications
National Certificate in Electricity Supply (Cable Jointer) (Level 3) [Ref: 0869]
National Certificate in Electricity Supply (Cable Jointer) (Level 4) [Ref: 0870]
The Electricity Supply Industry Training Organisation (ESITO) has completed a review of the qualifications listed above that were first registered in June 2001.
Reason for the review
It was deemed necessary to undertake a review of the cable jointer qualifications to ensure that they were continuing to meet industry needs.
A key requirement was to align the requirements of the level 3 Cable Jointer qualification with those of the Electrical Workers Registration Board.
The qualifications now include new unit standards which further break down the required skills a cable jointer needs as identified by an industry working group, which was set up to review these qualifications.
Main changes resulting from the review
National Certificate in Electricity Supply (Cable Jointer) (Level 3) [Ref: 0869]
National Certificate in Electricity Supply (Cable Jointer – Low Voltage) (Level 3)
The content of the qualification was amended to reflect the requirements of Schedule 3 in the Electricity Regulations 1997 and is focussed on the requirements of low voltage cable jointing in the range of 0–1000 volts AC.
Changes to structure and content
· Credit requirements were increased from 52 to 69
· Unit standards 10509, 10544, 12295, 17025 and 18276 were removed from the compulsory section

· Elective section was removed
· Unit standard 10548 was moved from the elective section to the compulsory section of the level 4 qualification.
National Certificate in Electricity Supply (Cable Jointer) (Level 4) [Ref: 0870]
National Certificate in Electricity Supply (Cable Jointer – High Voltage) (Level 4) with an optional strand in Cable Jointer Advanced
The content of the qualification was amended to reflect the requirements of industry and is focussed on high voltage cable jointing in the range of 1000 volts to 33kV.
Changes to structure and content
· Credit requirements were reduced from 55 to 44
· Unit standards 12298, 20061, and 20062 were added to the compulsory section
· Unit standard 10548 was removed from the elective section of the prerequisite qualification and added to the compulsory section
· Unit standards 10510 and 18272 were removed from the compulsory section
· Elective section no longer lists individual Electricity Supply unit standards as the most appropriate unit standards can now be selected from within the Electricity Supply subfield
· Unit standard 5628 was removed from the elective section
· Optional strand in Cable Jointer Advanced was added
· Unit standards 20063, 20064, and 20535 were added to optional strand of the qualification
· Unit standards 10550 and 10551 were moved from the compulsory section to the optional strand.
All existing candidates may complete version 1 of the qualification or transfer their existing achievements to version 2. It is anticipated that no existing candidates are disadvantaged by these transition arrangements. However, candidates may appeal in the first instance to the Electricity Supply Industry Training Organisation, which will consider any appeal on a case by case basis.
The previous versions of the qualifications will cease to be offered from December 2005. The last date for awarding the replaced versions will be 31 December 2008. Programmes leading to the award of the new version will be available for implementation following registration.
