Review of Plastics Production and Glass Container Manufacturing qualifications
· National Certificate in Plastics Production (Level 1) with strands in Injection Moulding, Extrusion, Blow Moulding, Thermoforming, Blown Film Extrusion, Film Conversion, Injection Stretch Blow Moulding, Rotational Moulding, Film Slitting, and Expanded Polystyrene Moulding [Ref: 0392]
· National Certificate in Plastics Production (Level 2) with strands in Injection Moulding, Extrusion, Blow Moulding, Pressure Thermoforming, Vacuum Thermoforming, Blown Film Extrusion, Film Conversion, Injection Stretch Blow Moulding, Rotational Moulding, Expanded Polystyrene Moulding, and Polystyrene Pre-expansion [Ref: 0393]
· National Certificate in Plastics Production (Level 3) (Expanded Polystyrene Moulding) [Ref: 0781]

The Plastics and Materials Processing Industry Training Organisation has completed the review of the qualifications listed above that were registered in February 1999 [Ref: 0392 and 0393], September 2000 [Ref: 0781], and April 2002 [Ref: 0945 and 0946].

The qualifications listed above have been enthusiastically adopted by the various sectors for which they were intended. However, stakeholders also see requirements for a General strand in the qualifications that allows people the opportunity to customise their learning more closely to their specific job roles. In this strand they are able to select unit standards from allied sectors that are commonly used within materials processing organisations, or to select more generic materials processing industry skills.
In addition, new sectors now covered by the Plastics and Materials Processing Industry Training Organisation saw the format of these qualifications as attractive. These sectors wish to have their own strands within this format, but acknowledge the common threads of skill and knowledge that run through apparently diverse manufacturing activities.
As a result of these requirements, the existing qualifications have been replaced by new qualifications that still retain the proven elements. The new qualifications are seen as a basis for encouraging training delivery efficiencies and the transfer of skills between different manufacturing sectors.

National Certificate in Materials Processing (Level 1) with strands in General, Plastics Injection Moulding, Plastics Extrusion, Plastics Blow Moulding, Plastics Thermoforming, Plastics Blown Film Extrusion, Plastics Film Conversion, Plastics Injection Stretch-Blow Moulding, Plastics Rotational Moulding, Plastics Film Slitting, Expanded Polystyrene Moulding, Glass Containers, and Paint Manufacturing [Ref: 1072]
The contents and requirements are the same except for the following changes:
· In the three strands Plastics Blown Film Extrusion, Plastics Film Conversion, and Plastics Film Slitting, Unit 340, Demonstrate knowledge of safe working practices in the printing and graphic pre-press industries is offered as an alternative to Unit 497, Protect health and safety in the workplace.
· Unit 272, Process and use plastics materials has been removed as a requirement for the Plastics Film Slitting strand.
· A General strand has been added.
· A Paint Manufacturing strand has been added.
· The following domains added to the Core Elective section: Distribution, Retail and Distribution Core Skills, Stock Control, Electronic Manufacturing, Engineering - Fabrication, and English for Speakers of other Languages.
· The following subfields have been added to the Core Elective section: Painting and Decorating and Environment.
· The following field has been added to the Core Elective section: Manufacturing.

This qualification has been replaced by the:

The requirements are the same, except that specific unit standards are no longer listed in the elective section. Unit standards may now be selected from a range of subfields and domains that encompass all of the unit standards listed in the elective section of the replaced qualification.
Transition
The subfield Retail, Distribution and Sales has replaced the subfields Distribution and Storekeeping and Warehousing. Credits from the subfields Distribution and Storekeeping and Warehousing may continue to be used to meet elective requirements.
The domains of Core Electronics and Electronic Manufacturing have moved from the subfield Electronic Technology to the subfield of Electronic Engineering. For the purposes of this qualification credits from these domains in the subfield Electronic Technology may continue to be used to meet the elective requirements.
People working towards the replaced qualifications will automatically transfer to the new qualifications, as they are still able to meet the qualification requirements. Candidates for the replaced qualifications will now be certificated under the new title of 'Materials Processing' with the appropriate strand.
