Summary of review and consultation process
A meeting involving Competenz and industry representatives was convened mid 2003 to deliberate the review of the unit standards in the Food Production - Milling domain.
During 2003, feedback was received from stakeholders, agreed upon, and incorporated into the reviewed unit standards.
Individual stakeholder processes demonstrated the need to separate the outcomes of unit standards 7706 and 7739. Some stakeholders had one person cleaning the grain then another conditioning the grain. Others conditioned grain, however, they did not flake grain. The combined unit standards did not allow for flexibility and resulted in a split to three new unit standards.
The full review of unit standards remaining in the Food Production - Milling domain is scheduled for completion in August 2004. The timeline for completing this would not have met the industry's need for the expeditious replacement of unit standards 7706 and 7739 so these two unit standards were reviewed separately.
The stakeholders were asked to consider the following:
• The currency of the unit standards and their suitability for existing and proposed qualifications
• The accuracy and appropriateness of their content
• Level and credits commensurate with performance outcomes
• Any gaps in skills and/or knowledge that could be captured by the development of new unit standards
Main changes resulting from the review
The review process has resulted in the following changes to the unit standards.
· The replacement of unit standards 7706 and 7739 with unit standards 20834, 20836, and 20837.
· The change to the level of the outcomes previously encompassed in 7739 - level 3 was considered more appropriate for those outcomes.
· The development of a new unit standard that covered the cooking of grain.
· Improved special notes to better convey assessment parameters, including improved definitions, and updated references to legislation.
· Improved and updated range statements, including clearer use of range statements that had the range stem may include but is not limited to.
· Titles amended to better convey the performance expectation of the unit standards, with element titles similarly altered in some instances to ensure consistency with the unit standard title
· The addition of an opening element in the practical unit standards covering safe working practices.
· Sundry editorial changes to performance criteria.
· Amendments to level and/or credits to better reflect the level of judgement required by the candidate, extent of supervision, and overall learning demand.
Unit standards categorised as category C expire at the end of January 2006.
