Review of Glass and Glazing qualification
National Certificate in Flat Glass with strands in Glazing, Decorative, Processing, and Automotive [Ref: 0304]
The Joinery Industry Training Organisation (JITO) has completed the review of the above qualification that was registered in September 2002.
Replacement qualifications
National Certificate in Glass Processing with an optional strand in Extended Glass Processing Skills [Ref: 1103]
National Certificate in Glazing (Level 4) [Ref: 1104]
Outline of the review process
The Glass Advisory Group of JITO initiated the review in response to requests from the glass and glazing industry, as the existing qualification did not cover emerging glass and glazing materials and technology.
The Advisory Group and JITO consulted with industry representatives and the Glass and Glazing Institute of NZ to ensure that new or revised qualifications reflected the requirements of the industry sectors. The multi-strand qualification was identified as no longer appropriate for the increasingly specialised sectors of the industry and it was considered timely that individual qualifications be developed for the glazing and processing sectors.
The Advisory Group advised that the term 'flat glass' is not used within the industry. 'Flat glass' implies that window glazing is the only component within the glazing industry. This is far from current practice, which includes structural glass, glass as building features such as balustrading, wind screens, etc. As a result, 'flat glass' has been removed from the new qualification titles.
Development of new qualifications for the automotive and decorative sectors of the industry is currently under consideration by JITO.
Main changes resulting from the review
The major changes from the review are as follows
· National Certificate in Glazing (Level 4) [Ref: 1104] and the National Certificate in Glass Processing with an optional strand in Extended Glass Processing Skills [Ref: 1103] are part replacements for the National Certificate in Flat Glass with strands in Glazing, Decorative, Processing, and Automotive [Ref: 0304].
· Both new qualifications have the National Certificate in Glass and Glazing (Introduction) (Level 2) or demonstration of equivalent skills and knowledge as a prerequisite.
· The inclusion of new unit standards covering new technology and processes.
· Replacement of unit standards expired as a result of review.
· Flexibility in the new qualifications in terms of options for skill specific unit standards.
