Summary of review and consultation process

The unit standards registered in the domains Ambulanceand Pre-hospital Emergency Care were due for review by December 2003.  The New Zealand Ambulance Education Council initiated the review in September 2002.  The review group included representatives from employers and training providers and included Ambulance Service management, PTE Management, workplace assessors and verifiers, the Wellington Free Ambulance Service, the Wairarapa Ambulance Service, the Order of St John (Otago, Hamilton, and Christchurch), Taranaki Healthcare, and representatives from the New Zealand Ambulance Education Council.

The review group concluded that the certificate level unit standards were fit for purpose and needed only minor amendments in order to clarify assessment requirements.  The changes did not impact upon the overall outcomes of the standards.  Following positive feedback on second drafts the unit standards were endorsed by the New Zealand Ambulance Education Council.

The review group decided that the diploma level standards have not been used sufficiently to warrant their immediate review.  A review process for the diploma level standards will be addressed in 2004.

Main changes resulting from the review

Changes were made to all the unit standards.  The amendments were largely editorial in nature; some clarification of assessment requirements were made; and the overall learning outcomes remain the same.
