Review of Adventure Tourism qualification

National Certificate in Adventure Tourism (Level 4) [Ref: 0565]

The Aviation, Tourism and Travel Training Organisation and Sports, Fitness and Recreation Industry Training Organisation have completed the review of the qualification that was registered in November 1998.

Date new version published                        June 2004

Outline of review process

A comprehensive review of the qualification commenced in 2001 following feedback from stakeholders that current qualification did not meet the needs of industry.  The review was conducted through the sectors represented on the Adventure Tourism Council of the Tourism Industry Association and wider consultation was conducted through this network, training providers who had been using previous versions of the qualification and industry assessors.  Version 4 was registered part way through the review in April 2003 as an interim measure to take into account the expired unit standards and to allow time for the current students enrolled in a programme of study to achieve the qualification.

An outcome of the review was the decision that Aviation, Tourism and Travel Training Organisation would develop a replacement qualification to meet the needs of stakeholders and provide more relevance for the adventure tourism sector of the tourism industry.

The Sport, Fitness and Recreation Industry Training Organisation (Sfrito) have agreed to no longer be jointly responsible for this qualification, as their gazetted coverage is for outdoor recreation, not adventure tourism.  Sfrito have committed to work closely with the Aviation, Tourism and Travel Training Organisation to support people involved in the adventure tourism industry.
