The National Qualifications Services of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority decided that the unit standards listed above, which were registered in October 2000, should have their period of registration extended.  The unit standards have also been revised to clarify terminology and correct typographical errors.  The outcomes have not changed.

The reason for the rollover is that the unit standards have not been used sufficiently to warrant a review at this stage.  A review is planned for 2006.

Summary of review and consultation process

At a scoping meeting held in June 2002, consisting of representatives of providers, moderators, Red Cross, New Zealand Fire Service, Occupational Safety and Health, New Zealand Ambulance Education Council, New Zealand Resuscitation Council and NZQA regarding the review of the core health unit standards, it was decided that these should be reviewed in three stages.  The first stage of the review would consider the health care unit standards (6127, 6413-6417, 6420-6426), the second stage review would consider the anatomy and physiology unit standards (6418, 6419, 12699-12732, 14785, 14786) and the final stage review would consider the three first aid unit standards (6400-6402).

This review comprises the second stage.  A panel for the review of the anatomy and physiology unit standards was convened in February 2003 consisting of providers, the National Moderator, and representatives of the New Zealand Ambulance Education Council, the National Moderator of Beauty Therapy unit standards, and a physiology specialist to consider the unit standards relating to anatomy and physiology listed above.

The review was prompted by the need to update the unit standards as most of them had reached their expiry date.  There was also the need to address the unit standards in terms of fitness for purpose, and the need to update terminology and clarify some of the assessment evidence required.  In addition to individual amendments to improve fitness for purpose, all the unit standards have been updated with regard to the moderation option and the 'comments to' section.  Some credit values have changed to reflect actual learning and assessment time.

Main changes resulting from the review

The review process has resulted in the following changes to the unit standards.

·        Typographical, spelling, and grammatical errors were corrected.

·        Change of titles as indicated in the table below.

·        Decrease in the number of credits in unit standard 12705.

·        Increase in the number of credits in unit standards 12699, 12720, and 12721.

·        Deletion of and/or changes to special notes to clarify requirements.

·        Clarification of some range statements.

·        New unit standard 20700 created by combining elements previously incorporated in unit standards 6418 and 12705.

·        Moderation option updated.

Impact on existing provider accreditations

None.

Impact on Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP)

These unit standards are covered by AMAP 0104 it has been updated to reflect the review.  The AMAP covers first aid unit standards as well as unit standards in health care, and anatomy and physiology, and has recently been amended to include special requirements for providers of first aid unit standards.  The AMAP has been amended to include the eight generic criteria for accreditation.
