Summary of review and consultation process

The review was initiated by the Seafood ITO's Compliance Advisory Group, in response to the repeal of the Fisheries Act 1983.  The review was primarily to ensure that the unit standards reflect current legislation and practice.  A full consultation process was arranged, and a Review Project Group set up to collate feedback received.  The Advisory Group then consulted widely to ensure that the reviewed unit standards reflected the changes requested by industry.

Main changes resulting from the review

The review process has resulted in the following changes to the unit standards.

·        The unit standard outcomes have been brought into line with the Fisheries Act 1996, and references to the Fisheries Act 1983 have been removed.

·        The emphasis in unit standards 16560, 16561, and 16563 has been changed from the type of vessels candidates work on, to the nature of the work the candidates perform.  Reference to 'non-processing vessels' and 'processing vessels' has been removed and replaced by 'harvesting' and 'processing' on a commercial vessel.  This also resulted in some content changes in unit standard 16561 but the overall outcome remains the same.

·        Unit standard 16562 has been changed to reflect the understanding candidates need in relation to the responsibilities for compliance under the Fisheries Act 1996.

·        Unit standard 16563 has been changed to reflect the understanding and skills needed for the management of systems required for seafood harvesting.

·        Changes have been made to titles, special notes, elements, and performance criteria to reflect the above and for consistency among the unit standards.

·        Level of unit standard 16562 has been reduced from 5 to 4.
