Summary of review and consultation process
This unit standard was reviewed to meet the needs of a broad range of outdoor users. A focus group of high users of this unit standard was convened in May 2004 to review the content of the standard. This included representation from major stakeholders in the outdoor recreation and first aid sectors including the NZQA First Aid Advisory Group. Consultation was also carried out by phone and email with other key representatives from the New Zealand Rafting Association, Snowsport Patrol and Mountain Guiding industries, Whakaruruhau Ngā Mahi a Te Rehia, Department of Conservation, and workplace and provider assessors.
Main changes resulting from the review
The focus of this unit standard has shifted from managing 'first aid' in the outdoors to encompassing the additional aspects of a full emergency response. The first aid knowledge component is now smaller and more pertinent to the specific outdoor activity chosen. As a result, unit standards 6400-6402 are now prerequisites for this unit standard.
In the first aid context, this unit standard is seen as a stepping stone from the First Aid unit standards 6400-6402 to the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care unit standards 14470-14473. The standard is still set at level 3, but the credits have been increased to reflect the additional emergency response skills, and detailed focus on a chosen discipline.
· Credits have increased from 3 to 5.
· Title has been changed to better reflect content.
