Review of Clothing Manufacture qualifications

 

National Certificate in Clothing Manufacture (Sewing) (Level 2) [Ref: 0072]

National Certificate in Clothing Manufacture (Complete Garment Sewing) (Level 3) [Ref: 0824]

 

The Apparel and Textile Industry Training Organisation has completed the review of the qualifications listed above that were registered in March 2001.

 

Replacement qualification

 

National Certificate in Clothing Manufacture (Elementary Sewing Skills) (Level 2) [Ref: 1161]

 

Date new versions published                        April 2005

 

The Apparel and Textile Industry Training Organisation undertook a review of the qualifications listed above following industry and stakeholder requests for qualifications which better reflected the difference in skills gained through training providers and those gained through workplace training.

 

Main changes resulting from the review

 

The National Certificate in Clothing Manufacture (Sewing) (Level 2) [Ref: 0072] has been reviewed and replaced with the National Certificate in Clothing Manufacture (Elementary Sewing Skills) (Level 2) [Ref: 1161].

 

A new level 3 qualification has been developed for use in industry.  The National Certificate in Clothing Manufacture (Commercial Sewing Skills) (Level 3) [Ref: 1162] has been designed for those people working in clothing manufacture industry who are able to perform at basic production level.

 

The title of the National Certificate in Clothing Manufacture (Complete Garment Sewing) (Level 3) [Ref: 0824] has been changed to the National Certificate in Clothing Manufacture (Basic Garment Assembly) (Level 3) [Ref: 0824].

 

A National Certificate in Clothing Manufacture (Commercial Garment Assembly) (Level 4) is also proposed to recognise more advanced garment assembly skills.  This qualification will be for people working in the clothing manufacturing industry as sample machinists.

 

The existing National Certificate in Clothing Manufacture (Sewing) (Level 3) [Ref: 0823] is being retained as it widely used in industry and is still relevant.

 

National Certificate in Clothing Manufacture (Sewing) (Level 2) [Ref: 0072]

 

This qualification was replaced with the National Certificate in Clothing Manufacture (Elementary Sewing Skills) (Level 2) [Ref: 1161].

 

Changes to structure and content include

·          Unit standards 5296, 5297, 5299 and 5300 removed

·          Unit standards 20342 and 20343 added to the compulsory section

·          Requirements for Elective A expanded to allow credits to be selected from the Home and Life Sciences - Textile Technology domain

·          Requirements for Elective B expanded to allow credits to be selected from anywhere on the NQF.

 

Transition

 

People currently enrolled in a programme leading to the award of the National Certificate in Clothing Manufacture (Sewing) (Level 2) [Ref: 0072] may either complete that qualification or transfer to the replacement qualification.

 

The last date for people to complete the replaced qualification is 31 December 2007.

 

Candidates transferring from the replaced qualification to this qualification and who are already credited with 5296, 5297, 5299, and 5300 can use them for exemptions as follows.

Changes to structure and content

·          Title of the qualification has been changed to better reflect the purpose of the qualification and the skills attained

·          Purpose statement updated

·          Recommended prior qualification added to Special Notes

·          Elective B and its requirement for 10 credits from anywhere on the NQF has been removed

·          Elective A is renamed Elective, the credit requirement has increased from 15 to 16, and the list of specified standards has been expanded to allow credits to be selected from the whole Clothing Manufacturing subfield and the Home and Life Sciences - Textile Technology domain

·          Unit standard titles, levels and credits have been updated

·          Credit total for the qualification decreased from 60 credits to 51 credits.

 

Transition

People currently enrolled in programmes leading to the award of version 1 of this qualification may either complete that version or transfer to the new version.  The last date for award of previous versions is 31 December 2007.

 

The last date for people to complete an earlier version is 31 December 2007.
