Summary of review and consultation process
During 2004, all the National Pool Lifeguard Award (NPLA) assessors, the NZ Recreation Association (NZRA) and the pool management community were consulted and asked to forward issues of concern with the award, including the unit standards that make up the award. Interactive sessions were held with Just Add Water/s 2003 and the findings from seventy PoolSafe assessments were gathered. Additional information came from the investigation of serious incidents at pools, and a mounting body of industry opinion lodged with NZRA, Water Safety New Zealand, and Sfrito. The results from these consultations informed the review of the NPLA unit standards.
There were one hundred written replies (only 80 received in time to be included) evenly distributed through the country. The preliminary results of the survey were moderated and critiqued by NPLA assessors in a series of six workshops and by relevant national bodies.
The survey results along with other industry learning clarified any outstanding issues and the information gathered was used to make changes to the NPLA unit standards.
Main changes resulting from the review
· The minimum pool depth in which NPLA can be assessed was specified at 1.2 metres
· Swimming proficiency was required as a prerequisite for unit standard 5683
· Minimum assessor requirements to assess NPLA were clarified
· Special notes were updated to reflect current industry practice
· The NPLA can only be issued by a Sfrito registered assessor in public pools or institutions that set up as public pools.
· No changes to titles, levels, or credits.
