Date new versions published                        August 2005

On 19 February 2004, a meeting of the Furniture Finishing Advisory Group was held to review the existing qualifications.  Feedback from assessors and moderators had indicated that the qualifications were no longer fit for purpose.  As a result of the review the existing Level 2 qualification was restructured, the Level 4 qualification was replaced and a new qualification was developed at Level 3.  The review has resulted in qualifications designed to enable trainees to have a career progression through the industry from entry at level 2 to tradesperson at Level 4.  This will enable industry training plans for trainees to meet the needs of the industry.

Main changes resulting from the review

Amendments were made to credit totals, unit standards were added and deleted from the qualifications, the structure of the qualifications were amended, and expiring unit standards were replaced.  The credit requirement for the Level 4 qualification has decreased from 140 credits to 42 credits with the relevant unit standards being incorporated into the new National Certificate in Furniture Finishing (Level 3) [Ref: 1180].

Following its review by the Furniture Finishing Advisory Group in August 2005, the qualification was replaced by a new qualification with the same title.  Although the title is the same, the new qualification was developed by the NZ Furniture Industry Training Organisation to meet the needs of stakeholders and industry.  There are substantial differences between the structure and content of the two qualifications.

Differences between the two qualifications

·      Credit total has decreased from 140 to 42.

·      Unit standard 3156 was moved from the compulsory section to the elective section.

·      Unit standards 2208, 2209, and 12607 are now included in the compulsory section of the new qualification the National Certificate in Furniture Finishing (Level 3) [Ref: 1180].

·      All other unit standards in the compulsory section were removed and replaced with unit standards 2211, 3155, and 3157.

·      The unit standards in the elective section were replaced with unit standards from the first line management, quality management, delivery of adult education and training, boatbuilding, furniture finishing, furniture making, door and window joinery, joinery machining and stairs and other joinery trade skills domains.

All existing trainees can either complete the replaced qualification or transfer to either of the new qualifications.  The last date for the award of the replaced qualification is 31 December 2006.

The NZ Furniture Industry Training Organisation intends that no existing trainee is disadvantaged by these arrangements and will continue to recognise the replaced qualification.  Any person who feels disadvantaged by the transition process should contact the NZ Furniture Industry Training Organisation.
