Revision of Carpentry qualification
National Certificate in Carpentry (Level 4) [Ref: 0016]
The Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO) has revised the qualification listed above that was registered in July 1995.
Date new versions published August 2005
The review of this qualification is planned to take place in December 2006
Reason for the revision
The BCITO was approached by the National Association of Steel-Framed Housing (NASH) with regard to the inclusion of unit standards relevant to the construction of steel-framed buildings in the National Certificate in Carpentry (Level 4). Steel framing is one of the most common construction systems used in New Zealand today, and NASH felt that the qualification needed to reflect that. In consultation with NASH, six unit standards relating to steel framing were selected and included in the Elective B section of the qualification.
Industry has required that qualified people are able to demonstrate that they have an understanding of weathertightness in buildings, as a response to the current 'leaky building' issue. A unit standard relating to weatherproofing has been included in the compulsory section to address this.
Main changes resulting from the revision
Version 8 was issued following revision in order to update/make changes to content in response to industry requirements. This includes the addition of one compulsory unit standard, and six unit standards to Elective B, and an increase in the total credits.
Changes to structure and content
· New unit standard 21211 was added to the compulsory section.
· The inclusion of unit standards 20887 and 20888 from the carpentry theory domain in Elective B.
· The inclusion of unit standards 20889, 20890, 20892 and 20893 from the carpentry domain in Elective B.
· The total credits for the qualification are now in the range 284 to 288.
Transition
People currently working towards version 7 or 5 may choose to complete that version or transfer their results to version 8.
Version 6 of the qualification will not be awarded.
The last date for award of version 7 is 31 December 2010. The last date for award of version 5 is 31 December 2006. Prior versions have passed their final award date.
Publicity for the revised qualification is through industry advisory groups and direct contact with providers as appropriate.
It is the intention of the BCITO that no existing candidate is disadvantaged by these transition arrangements. Any person who considers they have been disadvantaged is requested to contact the BCITO.
