Summary of review and consultation process

The review of these unit standards was initiated following a request from industry for the development of a national qualification for flight attendants.  An expert panel, consisting of representatives from the major airlines, Royal New Zealand Air Force, flight attendant (FARSA) and pilot (ALPA) unions, and training providers, met in Auckland in March 2004 to determine the skills and knowledge required of a flight attendant; discuss whether the existing unit standards were fit for purpose; and identify gaps for which unit standards would need to be developed.

A sub-committee of this group met several times during 2004 to review the existing unit standards and to develop the content for the new unit standards, which were circulated through the expert panel to wider industry for feedback.  All feedback was considered and, where appropriate, incorporated into the unit standards, which were then endorsed by ATTTO's Aircraft Operations Advisory Group.

Main changes resulting from the review

·        Unit standard 9243 was designated as category D.  It will expire, and not be replaced.

·        Unit standard 9244 had an element, 'Manage passengers in a post evacuation situation', added.  Several changes were made to performance criteria and the credit value was increased to 14 to reflect the learning and assessment requirements of these additions and changes.

·        Unit standard 9245 had Unit 21834, Demonstrate knowledge of introductory aviation terminology, added to the entry information as a prerequisite.

·        Thirteen new unit standards were developed.

Unit standard 9243, categorised as category D, expires at the end of December 2006.
